Thieves On The Fens Thieves On The Fens by Joy Ellis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

                                    THE BLURB

DI Nikki Galena gets a series of anonymous calls. She is told the place, time, and who will die.

But the messages are in a secret language used only by villains. Nikki and her team must decode the riddles and work out where the threats are coming from.

Meanwhile, the Fens have been hit by a series of “designer burglaries.” It appears that a new gang of thieves are stealing to order.

And things get very close to home when a friend of Nikki’s mother dies suddenly and perhaps suspiciously.

Are any of these events connected, and can Nikki and her team work out the identity of the mysterious caller before anyone else dies.

                                                           MY THOUGHTS

This gripping thriller starts with its foot firmly on the accelerator from the very first page and continues building up speed until the story crosses the finishing line and stamps on the brakes leaving the reader gasping for breath and very happy that they were safely strapped into their comfy reading chair.I liked Nikki Galena and her close knit team,I liked how the team worked well together and that other team members were able to contribute their own theories about the cases rather than Nikki always having all the answers.I really liked Nikki`s mother Eve and her ex intelligence friends Wendy,Lou and Rene, they were a wonderful group of diverse personalities.I would love to read a spin off series featuring them getting involved in their own adventures, maybe they could set up their own private investigator service and Nikki could make a guest appearance every now and again. This was a well plotted thriller, both the main cases where intreguing, packed with twists and turns, suspense, mystery and adventure.

Although this is the eighth book in the series,it can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone.I haven't read any of the previous books but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of this entertaining, riveting thriller.

THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on criminals but fiercely loyal to her team.

HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has a daughter and an ex-wife who wants his attention.

THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

UK #1 Best Seller with THEIR LOST DAUGHTERS and THE FOURTH FRIEND

700,000 books sold and rising!

"I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the sixties and seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!

And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and our two second generation Springer spaniels. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I can, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre was suddenly clear. I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!"

  1. Hi Nicki,

To award this one the full 5 stars, you really must haved enjoyed it.

I am so pleased that you pointed out that the story works well as either a stand alone or as part of the series, as I am terrible at sequence series reading!

When I reached the author bio. I realised that I have checked out an earlier book in the series, although I have marked none of them as 'Want To Read'.

I guess that was simply a "too many books, too little time" issue, but I can see I am going to have to change that!

I know nothing about the area of the country this series is set in, so that will also be a new experience.

    Thanks for sharing :)

  2. Hi Yvonne

I fully understand the Too many Books, too little time comment. In my case it's all netgalleys fault,I tell myself no more but they just have so many good books...lol

The problem with some book series is that the story can get bogged down with information from previous books which causes me to lose interest in the one that I am reading. In this one there was little snippets every now and then but not enough to spoil the story.

I don't know anything about the area that this series is set in either.

    Thanks for your comments

    Best wishes
    Nicki x
